Cardiac ultrasound, also known as echocardiography, is used to assess the structure and function of the heart.
Cardiac ultrasound is most commonly performed from the chest wall, but it can also be done via the esophagus using a thin tube. The most common reasons for performing the examination through the esophagus are to detect inflammatory changes in the valves, to look for thrombi in the atrial appendages, and to provide a more detailed analysis of structural abnormalities (such as valvular defects).
