The thought of entering a loud, tube-shaped machine can feel distressing. It’s helpful to know that the MRI scanner is open at both ends, and the staff at the MRI unit have several methods to make the experience more comfortable.
Claustrophobia, nervousness, or anxiety should be discussed in advance. Inform the physician who refers you to the examination or contact the unit where the examination will be performed.
Things that often help during the examination include having a companion present, listening to music, adjusting lighting and ventilation, and/or taking a calming pre-medication. The pre-medication is prescribed by the unit responsible for your care. Please contact them well in advance.
It is especially important to mention this in the following cases:
You suffer from severe claustrophobia.
You have previously had to interrupt or cancel an MRI examination due to anxiety.
You are large-bodied and are concerned about fitting into the scanner.
Share your thoughts also with the nurse who receives you for the examination. We aim to create a calm environment and listen to your hopes. Going through the examination step by step often helps to ease the mind. During the examination, the nurse is nearby and can see you at all times. You can call the nurse at any moment by pressing the call button in your hand. Claustrophobia is quite common, but MRI examination is usually successfully completed.
You are warmly welcome to your MRI examination – with peace of mind.
