Opportunities provided by hospice care

Hospice care provides the opportunity to focus on living the best life possible.

Moving to hospice care may feel hard at first, but the meaning and opportunities provided by hospice care often become clearer both to the recipient and their loved ones over time, and start to look like something positive and a source of comfort. Hospice care does not mean not receiving care anymore; instead, the focus changes from illness-specific treatment to symptom relief.

Once you’ve had the chance to discuss your concerns related to the progression of your illness with your doctor and nurse, you may be able to focus on making the remainder of your life as good as possible. Hospice care accepts that life is finite and ends in death.

At its best, hospice care can be a unifying experience for the whole family. Maintaining an open dialogue among the family helps both the patient and the family find sources of hope in the face of approaching death.

The foremost sentiment might be gratitude for the life you have had – both the good that life has brought and the hardships you have faced, along with the lessons that these experiences have taught along the way. Sometimes feelings of guilt arise over things left undone, misunderstandings, and offence caused to others. However, these experiences are a part of almost everyone’s life. Forgiveness, towards both others and oneself, is a part of life too.

While receiving hospice care, you can still enjoy life and the little moments of joy that it brings, making adjustments according to your strength and energy levels. You can look back on your life alone, with family and friends, or with professionals. When you’re doing things like visiting a familiar place or seeing an old friend after a long time apart, your past experiences provide strength and lift the spirit. Looking at photos may also be a good way to look back on past experiences. And finally, sometimes it’s good to simply rest and spend time with your thoughts.
