Blood products in hospice care

As death draws closer, receiving blood products no longer gives the patient the desired benefits; instead, they may lead to distressing symptoms.

As the last weeks of life are approaching, giving the patient red blood cell transfusions or other blood products is no longer beneficial. Repeatedly treating the anaemia of a patient in hospice care, or giving the patient other types of blood products, does not make the patient feel better, but may instead cause discomfort.
