Where can I find support as someone close to a person with an incurable illness?

People close to someone with an incurable illness can support their own wellbeing by living their own life to the best of their ability. Things such as friends, hobbies, and work may offer strength and support wellbeing.

Being close to a person with an incurable illness may provoke many questions and strong emotions in the person’s life. The situation is taxing on loved ones, both mentally and in practical terms.

Palliative care and hospice care include support for those close to the patient as well. It’s a good idea to talk about how you’re coping, as well as any concerns you have related to it, with the care staff in the unit in charge of care.

Professional help is available in places such as occupational health or your health centre. Peer support activities and organisations may also be helpful in supporting personal wellbeing.

For information about coping at home and other issues related to social support, contact the social worker in your place of care or in your area. For information about social benefits, contact Kela, the Social Insurance Institution of Finland.
