Carbohydrate sources

Tampereen Diabetesyhdistys (the Tampere diabetes association) has produced leaflets in several languages to assist with identifying sources of carbohydrates.

Below you will find information about foods containing carbohydrates, portions that contain about 10g of carbohydrates, and foods that do not contain carbohydrates.

The picture features foods and snacks that contain carbohydrates. Sugar, honey, sweets, bread and baked goods, porridges, cereals, and muesli, dairy products and ice cream, legumes, potatoes, rice, pastas, and corn, berries, fruits, and juices all contain carbohydrates. Vegetable-based products like oat and soy drinks and yoghurts also contain carbohydrates. The amount of carbohydrates in these may vary significantly depending on the ingredient used.

The picture features foods and snacks that contain 10 g of carbohydrates. For example, 2 dl of milk, unflavored sour milk or yogurt, 1 dl of sweetened yogurt, one fruit weighing about 100 g or half a banana, 2-3 dl of berries, 1 dl of cereal, 1 dl of porridge, one bread slice weighing about 20 g, half a Karelian pasty, one egg-sized potato, one crispbread, just under 1 decilitre of rice, pasta or mashed potatoes, and 1 dl of ice cream each contain about 10 g of carbohydrates.

Fish, poultry, meat, cheese, oil, and vegetables do not contain significant amounts of carbohydrates. The picture shows examples of these foods.

The picture features foods and snacks that do not contain carbohydrates. For example, fish, chicken, eggs, meat, spreads and oils, cheeses, coffee, tea, unsweetened light juice, vegetables, and nuts do not contain significant amounts of carbohydrates.
