Diabetes and army

At the moment diabetes prevents military service.

From 2001 to 2017, a person with diabetes could volunteer for military service, provided that they did not have any complications related to diabetes and that they had a good blood sugar balance. This practice changed in 2019 by Defence Command’s decision. The decision was made on the basis of a report and recommendation by the expert work group of the Centre for Military Medicine, and it is based on the risks applicable to the ability to serve and safety of service.

A conscript’s ability to serve means that the conscript is able to complete their military service pursuant to the Conscription Act without risking their or others’ safety of service.
