Basal insulin injection timing in MDI

In addition to the basal insulin dose, you may also affect your blood sugar with the timing you take it.

Insulin detemir is taken in two batches in the morning or before noon and then again in the evening at bedtime, normally around 21–23. Initially, the two doses can be of the same size. The doses are adjusted on the basis of glucose sensor results or blood sugar self-measurements.

Insulin glargine 100 units/ml is usually taken as one injection. To ensure that the insulin is efficient enought for the insulin resistance of the dawn phenomenon, it is recommended to take it in the evening. For some individuals, the effect does not last 24 hours; they should split the dosage into two times, which then corresponds to the dosing of detemir insulin.

In theory, insulin glargine 300 units/mL and insulin degludec can be taken any time of the day.
