The end of the emergency department visit

After examination, procedures, and observation, the patient will be either discharged or transferred to an inpatient ward in the hospital or health care clinic for further treatment.

Unless a patient’s health demands inpatient treatment, and if they can be reasonably expected to cope at home either independently or with the support of their close network, they will be discharged.

On discharge, a patient will be provided with instructions for self-care, a sick leave note if necessary, and prescriptions for any medication they may have been prescribed. They may journey home by their own car, using public transit, or, if their condition so demands, taxi transportation reimbursed by Kela.

Further treatment at the hospital’s or health care clinic’s inpatient ward

A patient may receive further treatment at an inpatient bed ward of the hospital or health care clinic.

The emergency department personnel will provide for a patient in need of such further care with transportation to the inpatient ward. Sometimes, a patient’s ailment and condition may require they be transferred directly from the emergency department to an operating theatre, procedure room, or an intensive care unit.

A hospital will conduct further treatment if the patient’s condition so demands, or if the reason for their ailment has not been determined and further investigations are urgently required.

A patient may transfer to the inpatient ward of their own health care clinic either by ambulance or a stretcher-equipped taxi. A patient in good condition may, in some circumstances, also travel by a regular taxi.
