Diet in type 1 diabetes

If you have type 1 diabetes, you are recommended to have a diet of the same quality as the rest of the population.

A person with type 1 diabetes can enjoy normal healthy food that helps with weight control. There is no need to plan a special diet, use diabetes products or stick to a sugar-free diet.

You can plan your meals in different ways based on your personal preferences and energy requirements. There is no specific need to limit the intake of carbohydrates, and the amounts of carbohydrates can vary from meal to meal, as long as you factor it in in the mealtime insulin dose.

As a person with type 1 diabetes has a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, the overall healthiness of food should also be taken into consideration in terms of the risk of coronary artery disease. Your food choices can make a difference in terms of preventing and treating high blood pressure and lipid metabolism disorders.
