Foot risk category 0 in diabetes

If a person with diabetes has a normal protective sensation in the feet and there are no signs of reduced arterial circulation in the feet, the risk category is 0.

If you are not diagnosed with a loss of protective sensation in the feet and the circulation in your feet is normal, you belong to the diabetic foot ulcer risk category 0. The risk of a long-term foot ulcer is low.

A new risk assessment will be conducted once a year. Your nurse can instruct you on how to care for your feet and what footwear to use.

Instructions for you, if your risk category is 0:

  • As long as you are not diagnosed with a diabetes-related foot problem in your feet and you are able to take care of your feet on a daily basis, you have no need for regular foot therapy services.

  • If you have other foot therapy-related issues or you find it hard to look after your feet yourself, you will need to have the situation and treatment assessed.

  • Continue to take good care of your diabetes, pay attention to lifestyle choices that are good for your arterial health and remember to keep your blood pressure and blood cholesterol at a good level.
