Clearing the airways and stopping the bleeding

Make sure the patient is breathing.

​Clear the airways:

  • Place one hand on the patient’s forehead and the other under their chin.
  • Cautiously tilt the head backwards.
  • Feel for the breath with the back of your hand.
  • See if the chest is moving up and down.
  • If the patient is not breathing or is breathing abnormally, move them onto a hard surface and perform CPR.

Stop bleeding:

Stop the bleeding of a wound by pressing it with a woolly hat, scarf or some other suitable piece of clothing.
