Assessing the need for care

The urgency of sudden symptoms and the need for emergency care can be assessed together with the patient.

In the assessment of a need for emergency care, it is decided whether urgent examination and treatment is required in the case of sudden illness or injury.

Emergency care means the immediate assessment and treatment of a sudden illness, injury, or the treatment of a chronic illness that has taken a turn for the worse. Emergencies are situations where treatment cannot be postponed until the following day.

The assessment is carried out in collaboration with everyone involved in the clinical pathway, including the patient and their family, to Emergency Response Centre operators and medical professionals. To help people make the appropriate choices about seeking medical advice, easy-to-use and accessible online and mobile tools will be needed in addition to phone helplines.
