The emergency dental services treat acute toothache and trauma only.

Criteria for emergency oral health care

  • swelling
  • limited opening of the mouth
  • difficulties in closing mouth
  • difficulty swallowing
  • fever with the above symptoms
  • dental trauma
  • ulcer in the oral cavity
  • bleeding, for example, following tooth extraction (if mouth appears to fill with blood rapidly)
  • intense pain that does not lessen with painkillers
  • prolonged pain, even when the tooth is not irritated by hot or cold
  • pain prevents sleeping
  • tooth fracture with the above symptoms
  • severe fracture in the front tooth that is clearly visible
  • broken fixed dental brace that digs painfully into the gums and the pain cannot be lessened by padding the affected area with, for example, chewing gum or dental wax

Events where emergency oral health care is not needed

  • mild pain that lessens with painkillers
  • pain caused by hot or cold
  • fracture in tooth or filling
  • Problems with dentures or removable dental braces

Greater Helsinki Area

HUS is responsible for evening, night and weekend emergency care for oral diseases in the Helsinki metropolitan area (Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo, Kirkkonummi, Kauniainen and Sipoo).

The emergency health care of oral diseases in the evening and weekends is available at Haartman Hospital starting 15.4.2019. Visiting address is Haartmaninkatu 4, building 12.

On weekdays the appointment will be 14-21.

On weekeds and public holidays between 8-21.

The out-of-hours emergency dental services

The out-of-hours emergency dental services for municipalities in Uusimaa Region (Askola, Hanko, Hyvinkää, Inkoo, Järvenpää, Karkkila, Kerava, Lapinjärvi, Lohja, Loviisa, Mäntsälä, Nummi-Pusula, Nurmijärvi, Pornainen, Porvoo, Raasepori, Sipoo, Siuntio, Tuusula and Vihti) are provided in Helsinki: Attendo Hammaslääkäripalvelu Oy, Hietaniemenkatu 6 B ,00100 Helsinki.

The emergency services are open Mon–Fri 15-21, on weekends and public holidays 8–21.

Based on information received by phone and agreed criteria for emergency dental care, the dental nurse will assess the patient’s need for care and books an appointment for urgent dental treatment.

Keusote on-call service outside municipalities (Hyvinkää, Järvenpää, Mäntsälä, Nurmijärvi and Pornainen)

On weekdays from 4 pm to 9 pm, weekdays and weekends from 8 am to 9 pm

Out-of-office dental care is available at the Hyvinkää Hospital Dental Care, address Sairaalankatu 3, Hyvinkää (B-building, 2nd floor, above the children's on-call service). Treatment is first aid, and follow-up treatment is provided by your own dentist. On-call times are available from 4 pm to 8 pm on weekdays and from 11 am to 6 pm on weekends and weekends.

You cannot go directly to the dentist's office, but make an appointment. The municipality should first call 040 352 6989 to assess the urgency of treatment. Out-of-office dentist's telephone number will be answered on weekdays from 4pm to 8pm and on weekends and weekends from 8am to 6pm.

The service is provided by Hammas Mehiläinen. The municipality pays the cost of the treatment received in accordance with the health center services, which the municipality bills the customer in arrears.

The night-time emergency services in oral health

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery emergency service also operates the night-time emergency care for oral diseases at the Töölö Hospital Emergency Department, Töölönkatu 40, 00260 Helsinki.

The night-time emergency services only treat patients whose treatment cannot be postponed to the following day in their local health centre.

Patients are treated in the order of urgency based on a medical assessment. Patients are asked to call and discuss their need for care with the Töölö Emergency Department tel. 040 621 5699.
