Malmi Emergency Department

The Malmi Emergency Department treats patients over the age of 16 from East, North, Southeast and Northeast Helsinki. Urgent cases are treated regardless of the patient’s home municipality. The emergency department is open 24/7.

The emergency department treats patients over the age of 16 with serious illnesses and a need for urgent care when their own health stations are closed. Children under the age of 16 are treated at the Paediatric Emergency Department at the New Children's Hospital (Stenbäckinkatu 9, Helsinki).

The Malmi Emergency Department is a joint service with psychiatric, internal medicine and minor surgery emergency services.

Registration and assessing the need for care

Take a number from the ticket machine and wait for your turn to register as a patient.

At the emergency department, the patient's need for care and urgency is first assessed, and the patient will be seen by a nurse or a doctor or placed in a treatment area for monitoring. If necessary, the patient is admitted to hospital. If the patient's condition does not require emergency care, the patient is advised to contact their own health centre. Patients are seen in order of urgency. This is why the waiting times can vary regardless of the order of arrival.

Nurse's consultation

Some of the emergency patients are seen by a nurse. The nurses who see emergency patients have been specially trained, and they will always consult a doctor when necessary.

Visiting the emergency department and patient inquiries

There are no specific visiting hours. Emergency patients undergo treatment and examinations, and the staff will interview them. To ensure the privacy of patients, accompanying family members are advised to wait outside the consultation room.

Café, snack vending machines, ATM

The café at Malmi Hospital is open Mon–Fri 7-20 (breakfast 7–9), Sat–Sun and public holidays 10-17.

The restaurant at Malmi Hospital is open for lunch 10.30–13.30.

There is a drinks and snack vending machine in the waiting area of the outpatient clinic.

There is no ATM at the hospital.

Parking

There is only limited parking near Malmi Hospital. There is free parking for 4 hours in front of the hospital. There is also short-term parking for dropping off and picking up passengers in front of the outpatient clinic. We recommend that you use public transport to arrive at the hospital.
