Typically, the strength of insulin in Finland is 100 units per millilitre of product (units/ml). Therefore, a three millilitre container of 100 units/ml insulin contains 300 units. The strength is always marked on the pen, cartridge or vial. When buying insulin abroad, it is good to check its strength as it may vary.
In addition to 100 units/mL, some insulin products come in strengths of 200 units/mL or 300 units/mL also in Finland. The user always doses units on the insulin pen. However, in stronger insulin, the same number of units has a smaller volume.
For example, if the basal insulin dose is 60 units, the subcutaneously administered amount of strength 100 units/mL, 200 units/mL or 300 units/mL insulin is 0.6 mL, 0.3 mL or 0.2 mL, respectively.
