Any pexaminations that require fasting are recommended to be performed first thing in the morning.
On the day before the examination, take tablets and insulin or other injectable medications as normal. On the morning of the examination, insulin injections or oral medications should be taken only after the examination has been completed. A delay of an hour or two will not cause significant changes in blood sugar levels.
If the examination requires a longer period of fasting, a slightly smaller dose of insulin than normal is usually recommended to be taken on the morning of the examination, and blood sugar is regulated at the healthcare facility with intravenous glucose solution and insulin.
However, basal insulin, or long-acting insulin, should never be completely omitted.
