How many have diabetes?

There are approximately half a million people with diabetes in FInland.

In Finland, there are approximately 500 000 people with diabetes in total. Approximately 400 000 have type 2 diabetes, and approximately 55 000 have type 1 diabetes. Approximately 20 percent or one in five of pregnant women are diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Other types of diabetes are less common.

Each year, approximately 22,000 individuals are diagnosed with diabetes in Finland. Of them, less than 2 000 get type 1 diabetes. Of them half are diagnosed under the age of 20 and half over the age of 20.

On a global scale, the number of people with diabetes is estimated at around 463 million. The number is anticipated to reach 700 million by 2045.
