When blood sugar is high for extended periods it can damage the nerves which regulate the automatic functions of the body.

The autonomic nervous system regulates the vital functions and adapts them to different requirements in life. The system is divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. They are not under voluntary control, they operate autonomously, that is, independently.

In the case of suspected nerve damage of the autonomic nervous system, the symptoms play an important role. In addition to a doctor’s examination, it is sometimes necessary to perform special examinations, mainly to rule out other reasons for the symptom.
