Nutritional therapy minor kidney failure

In even mild kidney failure, special attention must be paid to protein intake. Moderate intake of protein is achieved in minor kidney failure when the main meals are put together following the plate model.

A suitable amount of cold cuts is 1 slice per a piece of bread. If there is already meat/fish/vegetable protein on the plate, it is recommendable to leave cold cuts out and put some greens on on the bread. Food products enriched with protein or with added protein are not recommended.

It is okay to drink 5–6 dl of liquid dairy products per day and eat 2–3 slices of cheese in addition to that. This amount ensures a sufficient intake of calcium.

When it comes to fruit, berries, vegetables, wholegrains and unsaturated fats (vegetable margarines and oils, oil-based salad dressing, fish, seeds and nuts), it is good to follow the national guidelines for the general population.
